 Margaret Sugar

Welcome to Margaret Sugar's website. This is a celebration of Margie's life & impact on so many people over the years.

On August 8th, Margie was diagnosed with an aggressive, rare (poorly-differentiated neuroendocrine) cancer which ended her life on October 14th. Margie remained positive and content through her illness. Realistic about not fighting it, instead she continued to connect with her many friends and family, setting another example on how to live our own lives in the face of adversity, with serenity & peace.

Margie lived her life large, set a model for us all, and we should cherish our time with her. Feel free to browse all the blogs, look at some photos, or enter your brief comments, or longer remembrances.

Dear Friends and Family,

I have come to my place of work this Saturday morning to write all of you this email. This is where I have the most current list of my contact names and email addresses. At home we recently purchased a MAC computer. This is not the right time to learn a new computer system during this time of loss as my concentration is not the best right now. My work computer is the one I usually use and it is familiar and reliable so I write this note to you now on this quiet Saturday...

Thank you all for these updates. What a wonderful woman and wonderful family! Margie, I remember very fondly the class on Building your Own Theology we took together - a delightful way to share insights on the deeper aspects of life. You are all teaching us another deep lesson about life right now. Thanks to hospice and I hope you all continue to figure out ways to be comfortable and enjoy your family and friends - something we all could learn something about.... Love, Neal Submitted By: Neal McBurnett

Margie, you have been touching my heart for a long time. Remember those many years ago when you were "down" and we had dinner? But characteristic of your spirit, you bounced back in enthusiasm for life, taking on new challenges, creating friendships, and traveling everywhere. You have been a terrific role model for me, I know (and others, too, I am guessing) in your service and faithfulness to others. I love your generous way of asking questions and being interested in the thoughts and doings of others. These things and so much more of who you are is what I will miss and what I will remember when you are gone. I send energy for this new pathway. I love you Margie !! Submitted By: Carol Saunders

Margie, Hayden and I were shocked and saddened by hearing of the progression of your cancer. But yesterday, seeing you and hearing you and your family in church, we could only have admiration and respect for your decision to take charge of your life and enter Hospice. I used to work in long-term care and saw many people who simply went to pieces with denial and anxiety when they were given a really serious diagnosis. In you I see one of the most mentally and spiritually healthy and strong people that I know, with your acceptance of what might be unchangeable. We send our very best wishes and energy to you and to your family. Submitted By: Jonathan Williamson

Dear Margie, We're so sorry to learn of your cancer. We have enjoyed talking with you at church and being able to enjoy the lovely garden you've maintained there (and the bridge games we've shared). We will miss you profoundly. We wish you peace and comfort in the end of life you've chosen. May all go as you've planned. Submitted By: Lois & Dan Anderson

Dear Margie: I was so sorry to hear about your cancer. I guess I thought there would always be plenty of time to have more conversations and get to know you better. You are a wonderful and very interesting person and I feel so lucky to have met you. I greatly admire your social grace and ability to make people feel comfortable and accepted. I think you are a great role model -- probably for a lot more people than just me. If you have really decided not to eat, I sympathise. My mother did the same thing in March (at age 93). Her mistake, though, was not to give clear instructions in advance so that her caretakers could keep her comfortable when she lost the ability to communicate. If you are receiving visitors, I would love to come and see you, but if not, I understand. Love, Ellen Winner (O'Laughlin) Submitted By: Ellen Winner

your website Dear Margie, I have been thinking of you and Anne, Lib, John, and Peter a lot the last week. And oddly enough, was thinking of you all a lot about three weeks ago when Robert, Andrew and I were in Beijing for a month at an Artists' Residency Program. I thought of you for two reasons. We were staying way out on the outskirts of Beijing where it is not very Westernized. Our toillet was in our shower stall. We had a water cooler type thing with a big bottle of drinking water that a man brought on a bicycle. I thought of how you love to travel. And how when I saw you in Pennsylvania three years ago you said, "I've stayed in fancy places and I've stayed in places where you just shared whatever they had. I'm not a fussy traveler." I would like to be able to say that, too. China is the most different place I have ever been. And I thought of all of you because, I think, that when you go really far away, part of you wants to go home, and for me, in my mind the m
