 Margaret Sugar

Welcome to Margaret Sugar's website. This is a celebration of Margie's life & impact on so many people over the years.

On August 8th, Margie was diagnosed with an aggressive, rare (poorly-differentiated neuroendocrine) cancer which ended her life on October 14th. Margie remained positive and content through her illness. Realistic about not fighting it, instead she continued to connect with her many friends and family, setting another example on how to live our own lives in the face of adversity, with serenity & peace.

Margie lived her life large, set a model for us all, and we should cherish our time with her. Feel free to browse all the blogs, look at some photos, or enter your brief comments, or longer remembrances.

Dear Friends and Family,

I have come to my place of work this Saturday morning to write all of you this email. This is where I have the most current list of my contact names and email addresses. At home we recently purchased a MAC computer. This is not the right time to learn a new computer system during this time of loss as my concentration is not the best right now. My work computer is the one I usually use and it is familiar and reliable so I write this note to you now on this quiet Saturday...

We are both thinking of you and have enjoyed good times at your home and condo, good food and good friends. We are glad you are now more comfortable. Thanks for being the inspiration for the travel group that meets at Ruth Shanberge's, Fri. Sep. 12. Wish you might come. We are getting ready for Community Table this week and think of all the times you opened those cans of green beans. Your friends, Nancy and Min Submitted By: Min and Nancy

Dear Margie: As an old bat nurse, I was sad to hear of your illness, but honor the choice you made. Your are famous among my friends who entertain, as I told them what you told me in the late '50's: "If you don't get everthing perfectly clean, just light another candle and give them another glass of wine"! Oodles of love to the wonderful Wells girl who also taught me what a falconer (your brother) was. Barbara Submitted By: Barbara (Ford) Emerling

Dear lovers of Margie: All of us! She was one of the first classmates I met in the fall of 1944 at Wells College. She lived next door. She was the freshest breeze blowing through the dorm from day to graduation. I had had never met a thoroughly Western person; I grew to love her as a sister I didn't have. She was then as she is today --loving, vivacious, involved, adventurous. I could go on. Through the years we have been in touch through our "Round Robin" of Wells girls and reunions here and there. The bond has been strong and unbreakable. For all of those in our class who may not know of her illness, I send love and appreciation for the dimension you have added to our lives. THE SONG OF THE RIVER The snow melts on the mountain and the water runs down to the spring. And the spring is a turbulent fountain, with a song of youth to sing. Runs down to the riotous river, and the river flows to the sea. And the water again goes back in rain, to the hills where it used to be. And I wonder if life’s deep mystery isn’t much like the rain and the snow, Returning through all eternity to the places it used to know. For life was born on the lofty heights and flows with a laughing stream, To the river below who’s onward flow ends in a peaceful dream. And so at last, when our life has passed and the river has run it’s course, It again goes back o’er the selfsame track, to the mountain which was it’s source. So why prize life, or why fear death, or dread what has to be? The river ran it’s allotted span ’til it reached the silent sea. Then the water harked back to the mountaintop, to begin its course once more. So we run the course begun, ‘til

Happy Birthday Margie! Paula, Quinn and I have been so happy to have a friend of my mom's in the area. You've lit up many worlds in your life, including ours. I am sorry to hear of your illness, but know that your strength and optimism, so much like that of my loved mother, Nancy, will keep you going through these times. Gregg Submitted By: Gregg Painter

Margie, I am so sorry to hear of the diagnosis. And youhave made a decision for yourself befitting your strong and wonderful personality. I remember you from years ago at UU and liked and admired you. My husband and I are no longer in the area (we travel full time RV); but I hope my prayers and thoughts will cover the miles your way. May you be comforted by sweet joy and peace in the loving arms of your family and friends. Namaste. MaryAnne (Parker) Balzer Submitted By: MaryAnne (Parker) Balzer
